In this bookbinding session we will be learning how to bind our own sketchbooks using the Coptic stitch.
This bookbinding technique originated from early Christian’s in Egypt around 2nd century AD. It is a stitch that allows for the book to lie flat regardless of what page it is turned to.
The stitches is exposed and without a spine. It is a relatively simple stitch that adds beauty and character to the final book. We will be creating the interior, decorating the wooden covers using pyrography (wood burning) and then binding the pieces together.
Kristina Bodmin Smith Ma in Illustration will guide you through your book binding workshop and Ruth Wheeler Pyrographer and Artist will guide you in how to personalise your wooden covers with pyrography and paint.
We will both support you throughout the day and give tips for drawing, lettering and if time we can go out into the woods surrounding Birtley Woodland Art Space to sketch, draw or journal and be inspired by the nature that surrounds us.
The day will begin at 10 am with an optional half hour breath and mindfulness session on our woodland deck to set the tone of the day.

1.30 pyrography / finish book / option to start a smaller card book
3.30-4 pm finish
